How to Choose Your Umrah Hotel: Distance to the Haram Explained
What 100 metres, 500 metres and 2 kilometres really mean in Makkah and Madinah, and how to choose the right hotel for your family.

The single biggest decision in any Umrah package is the hotel in Makkah. It affects how often you pray in the Haram, how tired you feel and most of the price difference between packages.
What the distances really mean
| Distance | Walking time in Makkah | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 m | 2 to 5 minutes | Seniors, wheelchair users, Ramadan |
| 300 to 500 m | 5 to 10 minutes | Most families |
| 600 m to 1 km | 10 to 20 minutes, often uphill | Healthy adults on a budget |
| 2 km and more | Shuttle bus or taxi | Lowest price, young travellers |
Distance is usually measured to the edge of the Haram's outer courtyard, not to the Kaaba. Crowds at the gates during prayer times can add another ten minutes.
Makkah neighbourhoods
- Abraj Al Bait (Clock Tower): the closest 5 star hotels, directly opposite the King Abdulaziz Gate.
- Ibrahim Al Khalil Street: a mix of 3 and 4 star hotels, mostly a gentle walk downhill to the Haram.
- Ajyad: close to the Haram with steep streets in parts.
- Jabal Omar: newer 5 star hotels a few minutes away.
- Aziziyah: further out and cheaper, with shuttle buses.
Madinah is easier
In Madinah, most hotels in the central area are within 100 to 500 metres of Masjid an-Nabawi and the ground is flat. A 3 star hotel in Madinah is often as convenient as a 5 star in Makkah. Saving money here and spending it in Makkah is a smart choice.
Questions to ask before you book
- What is the exact hotel name, not just "or similar"?
- How many rooms share a bathroom, if any?
- Is breakfast included?
- Is there a shuttle, and does it run at prayer times?
- Are the lifts busy at prayer times? Large hotels can mean long waits.
Quick answers
Is a 5 star hotel worth it for Umrah?
For seniors, people with limited mobility and Ramadan travellers, usually yes. For healthy young adults, a closer 3 or 4 star hotel is often enough.
What does "or similar" mean?
It means another hotel of the same level and similar distance may be used. Ask for the confirmed hotel name before you pay in full.
Are Madinah hotels far from the mosque?
Most central hotels are within a few minutes' walk of Masjid an-Nabawi.
